“Life is like a game of chess. To win you have to make a move. Knowing which move to make comes with insight and knowledge, and by learning the lessons that are accumulated along the way. We become each and every piece within the game called life.”
The Village Chess Club is for Lansing area youth grades 6th-12th. It is a 13 week program that will run from 07/26/2021 through 10/23/2021 and is for all skills levels. We will meet for one hour on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30pm. Instruction will take place either at The Village Lansing or an outdoor location as weather permits (participants parent/guardian will be notified prior to any non Village sessions).
Our instructors will offer the understanding of chess under the United States Chess Federation (USCF), this way participants that learn to play the game of chess in our program can play anywhere!
Our mission is to give an appreciation of how thoughts affect outcomes, how every decision affects every outcome, and the ability to see the bigger picture. We believe that by teaching the game of chess, we are giving our young people the appreciation for their own thought processes. We want to give them the tools to think before they act, tools that they can apply to everyday situations and life.
Participants will receive various incentives and prizes throughout the program, their own chess rules book, chess journal, a Village Chess Club t-shirt, and a special "Refuse to Lose" t-shirt and certificate upon completion of the program.
The Village will also be holding chess fellowship for those ages 18+ that are not in high school. We will meet for one hour Wednesday and Thursday from 5:30-6:30pm. Instruction will take place either at The Village Lansing or an outdoor location as weather permits.
Our instructors play chess under the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and work with all skill levels. This is a time to learn how to play chess, learn more about chess, learn new things about chess, and to just fellowship with others around the game of chess.
There are many items needed to support the program that can be purchased online and delivered directly to The Village Lansing.
Support the many other things needed to support the program; items not available on amazon, incentives and prizes, t-shirt costs, etc.
I like to think ahead and plan my moves.... anything can happen in life you just have to know how to move with a purpose. My goal is to become a chess master. I want to help young people to grow and to always be aware of their surroundings.
Let's build a Village of love, peace, respect, and accountability.
THINK BEFORE YOU ACT
In Lansing Michigan, the year 2005, Gino Williams asked Bryan Leek to form a chess club. Bryan met with Michael McKissic (at the time owner of Snack & More), Michael agreed to allow the chess players to use his facility as a gathering place. A chess player; Fred Reynolds, marveled at how clever the knight chess piece moved. Fred proposed the chess group call itself "The Dangerous Knights". From that history, Dangerous Knights have participated throughout the greater Lansing area in many events and taught chess.
